UCUMC Home To New Charter School | ChurchInTheCircle.com - University Circle United Methodist Church | Cleveland, Ohio

Following many months of planning, our church has just entered into an innovative partnership with the Citizens Leadership Academy (CLA) to provide a "home" for Cleveland’s first Expeditionary Learning School – one of a national network of 175 schools rooted in project-based education that moves much of the learning out of the classroom and into the community. 

CLA is a new approach to grade-6-8, tuition-free public charter middle schools. It will open this August with its first sixth-grade class of 90 students, utilizing classroom, gymnasium and other space in our church. 

Dr. Chalker has been highly supportive of this effort to provide space for this growing Cleveland school. "I am very, very pleased that we are in a meaningful partnership initiating this most needed, creative and important education opportunity for Cleveland’s children and families." 

Shelly Saltzman, CLA founder and principal commented, "The fact that the church is within a short walking distance of the museums, the hospitals, and Case Western University, not to mention the Martin Luther King branch of the library, is phenomenal. We’re so excited about working with a congregation so committed to the community."

University Circle UMC member Dr. J.B. Silvers made the initial suggestion that we investigate the possibility of partnering with the Academy, which Kay Hogg, Director of Administration, and Dr. Chalker have pursued to this exciting conclusion.

"University Circle United Methodist Church is perfect for us because it is so close to Citizens Academy," said David Stein, Citizen board member who has been deeply involved in the facility search. Academy offices are located at the Cleveland Jewish Center on E. 105^th Street, just "around the corner" from our church.
