May 2011 Events at University Circle United Methodist Church

Friday, May 6 – The Wade Oval Walk Against Hunger will take place on Friday, May 6th from 11am-1pm. The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is one of the
largest of its kind in the nation, collecting money and food to provide more than 12 million meals for northeast Ohioans. Please join us in support of University Circle, Inc. and the people of NE Ohio. Walkers may participate for a minimum contribution of $10.

Sunday, May 8 – All women attending our 11am service will receive a special gift in recognition of Mother's Day.

Tuesday, May 10 – Attend the screening of Race to Nowhere at 7pm in our Great Hall. This award-winning documentary film is described by the New York Times as a "must-see film." Race to Nowhere chronicles the dark side of the achievement culture in our schools and serves as a call to families, educators and policy-makers to challenge current notions of what is "best practice" in educating our children. Find more information about the film and purchase tickets ($10/person) for this screening at http://www.racetonowhere.com.

Thursday, May 12 – A support group for families and individuals who have lost children as the result of violence meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, 6:30-7:30pm here at UCMC in the Yoder Room. Please stop by if you are interested, or call the church office for more information.

Saturday, May 14 – ALL men are invited to gather for lunch at 1:30pm. The location is Deagan's Kitchen at 14810 Detroit Ave, Lakewood OH 44107. The restaurant is at the corner of Detroit and Warren roads. Parking is in the rear lot. 216-767-5775.

Sunday, May 15 – This year's Rite Aid® Cleveland Marathon course rounds the corner from Chester Avenue to Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., where our gospel choir and musicians will provide enthusiastic, heart-pumping music from 9:30-10:30 to cheer on the runners. Everyone is encouraged to join in the fun on the south lawn to whoop and holler and add support for the racers. To encourage everyone's participation in our support of this city-wide event, the 9:30am adult classes will not be held. During worship at 11am, our Singing Children will present their final program of the school year.

Sunday, May 22 – The MENS Group welcomes Baiju Shah, founder, president and CEO of BioEnterprise (headquartered here in University Circle) and Chairman of the Global Cleveland Initiative, as the guest speaker at their "Community Speaks" Forum on Sunday, May 22, at 9:30am in the Great Hall. BioEnterprise, a non-profit organization, was created to encourage growth in the region's health-care economy. In its eight-year history, it can claim a hand in the birth of 89 Northeast Ohio biomedical companies, generating 1,900 jobs and drawing in $859 million in capital. Under the moving-force direction of Mr. Shah – described as "a walking Rolodex" – BioEnterprise has helped establish our region as a hot-spot for biomedical investment in the Midwest. Don't miss this opportunity to hear how one man's vision has helped move Cleveland's biomedical expertise and reputation ahead by leaps and bounds.

Sunday, May 22 – Confirmation of our young people will occur during worship.

Sunday, May 22 – Following the service, persons interested in volunteer opportunities are invited to a light lunch and 1-hour orientation/presentation by Hands-On Northeast Ohio. HandsOn NEO was founded in 2007 to effect positive change in the way individuals, businesses, non-profits, and civic leaders engage volunteers in a variety of critically beneficial human services. HandsOn NEO is completely changing the way northeastern Ohioans volunteer by making it easier for them to get involved and to make a big impact in their local communities. While most volunteer entities only refer volunteers to opportunities, HandsOn NEO is an affiliate of a larger HandsOn Network and its core programs provide actual management of volunteer projects using best practices learned through national training, research and networking. As a result, local volunteerism is more effective because it is monitored and constantly evaluated.

If you are interested in learning more about HandsOn NEO and how you could become involved in volunteer efforts that will positively impact individuals and organizations in our urban community, please join the UCUMC Outreach Committee and HandsOn NEO for a one-hour orientation event in the Great Hall following worship on Sunday, May 22nd. A light lunch will be provided, so please sign up at the church office or by e-mailing Phil Long at plongcrash@aol.com (please include "UCUMC" in the subject line.) Thank you!

Sunday, May 29 – UCUMC will host its monthly Neighborhood Lunch outreach to local residents over Memorial Day weekend on Sunday, May 29th at 1pm. Please look at the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board across from the office to consider contributing to this important meal on a holiday weekend.

University Circle United Methodist Church Holy Week Schedule REMINDER

Holyweek

Maundy Thursday – April 21, 7:30pm
This contemplative Maundy Thursday communion service of Impending Shadows remembers Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples. "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning "commandment" and referring to the new commandment Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper…to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34).

Good Friday – April 22, 7:30pm
Christians around the world set aside time on this Good Friday to contemplate Christ's suffering and death on the cross. Our evening service is one of solemnity, prayer and meditation.

Easter Sunday – April 24:
8:45am – "Son-rise in the Circle" – a brief service on our south lawn.
9-10:30am – Pancake breakfast in our Great Hall.
11:00am – Alleluia! Christ is Risen! After the solemnity and sacrifice of Lent and the passion of Holy Week, join us as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the fulfillment of his promise of
life everlasting.

Easter Sunday Reminders:
Sunday School Children and Confirmation Class Youth
are invited to join their families for worship on Easter Sunday.

IMPORTANT EASTER PARKING INFORMATION:
On Easter Sunday, due to an event at Judson Manor, the parking lot across E. 107th from the church will NOT be available to us. Parking is available on both sides of Parklane and E. 107th and on the east side of MLK Blvd. In-lot parking and shuttle service will be available at these locations: UCI Permit-only lot, PNC Bank lot, John Hay High School on the east side of Stokes Blvd. (E. 107th) south of Chester and at the Cleveland Public Library on the west side of Stokes Blvd. south of Chester.

University Circle United Methodist Church Palm Sunday Service on USTREAM. Now streaming every Sunday at 11am.

Dr. Chalker's Sermon: "A Mitigation Investigator". For the last month our great University Circle UMC video crew have been doing what I'd call an Alpha version of streaming our services on USTREAM. It's still Alpha and a little rough due to our poor AT&T DSL connection but it will be getting better as we refine our techniques and get our new HSD line installed. We recommend listening with headphones. Enjoy! Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

What do a Van and Patio have in common?

VAN NEEDED: UCUMC has a dream to obtain a multi-person, wheelchairaccessible van to provide rides to and from church for downtown persons, as well as to shuttle folks between area parking lots and the church. If you have contacts who might be helpful in this effort, please provide this information to our property manager, Chuck Huene.

PATIO PROJECT: We're quite sure that warm weather really will return to Clevelandand we will once again enjoy using the outdoor patio off the Parlor and Reception Room on the Sanctuary Level. Plans are underway to beautify that space with hay-rack baskets full of flowers on both sides of the railing and weather-tolerant umbrella tables and chair sets. If this is a project you would like to support with a financial gift, please make a check out to UCUMC and indicate "Patio" on the memo line. All contributions will be gratefully received and credited!

UCUMC Home To New Charter School | ChurchInTheCircle.com - University Circle United Methodist Church | Cleveland, Ohio

Following many months of planning, our church has just entered into an innovative partnership with the Citizens Leadership Academy (CLA) to provide a "home" for Cleveland’s first Expeditionary Learning School – one of a national network of 175 schools rooted in project-based education that moves much of the learning out of the classroom and into the community.

CLA is a new approach to grade-6-8, tuition-free public charter middle schools. It will open this August with its first sixth-grade class of 90 students, utilizing classroom, gymnasium and other space in our church.

Dr. Chalker has been highly supportive of this effort to provide space for this growing Cleveland school. "I am very, very pleased that we are in a meaningful partnership initiating this most needed, creative and important education opportunity for Cleveland’s children and families."

Shelly Saltzman, CLA founder and principal commented, "The fact that the church is within a short walking distance of the museums, the hospitals, and Case Western University, not to mention the Martin Luther King branch of the library, is phenomenal. We’re so excited about working with a congregation so committed to the community."

University Circle UMC member Dr. J.B. Silvers made the initial suggestion that we investigate the possibility of partnering with the Academy, which Kay Hogg, Director of Administration, and Dr. Chalker have pursued to this exciting conclusion.

"University Circle United Methodist Church is perfect for us because it is so close to Citizens Academy," said David Stein, Citizen board member who has been deeply involved in the facility search. Academy offices are located at the Cleveland Jewish Center on E. 105th Street, just "around the corner" from our church.

For more information on the CLA, go to www.citizensleadershipacademy.org and www.breakthroughcleveland.org.

TOMORROW at University Circle UMC 11am Worship: Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 Gabriel Fauré

Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845– 4 November 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th century composers. Among his best-known works are his Nocturnes for piano, the songs "Après un rêve" and "Clair de lune" and his Requiem.

Born into a cultured but not unusually musical family, Fauré revealed his talent when he was a small boy. He was sent to a music college in Paris, where he was trained to be a church organist and choirmaster. Among his teachers was Camille Saint-Saëns, who became a life-long friend. In his early years, Fauré earned a modest living as an organist and teacher, leaving him little time for composition. When he became successful, holding the important posts of organist of the Église de la Madeleine and head of the Paris Conservatoire, he still lacked time for composing, retreating to the countryside in the summer holidays to concentrate on composition.
By his last years, Fauré was recognised in France as the leading French composer of his day. An unprecedented national musical tribute was held for him in Paris in 1922 headed by the President of the Republic. Fauré had many admirers in England, but his music, though known in other countries, took decades more to become widely accepted.

Gabriel Fauré composed his Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 between 1887 and 1890. This choral–orchestral setting of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead is the best known of his large works. The most famous movement is the soprano aria Pie Jesu.

The piece has a duration of about 35 minutes. It consists of seven movements:

I. Introït et Kyrie (D minor)
II. Offertoire (B minor)
III. Sanctus (E flat major)
IV. Pie Jesu (B flat major)
V. Agnus Dei et Lux Aeterna (F major)
VI. Libera me (D minor)
VII. In Paradisum (D major)

"It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience. The music of Gounod has been criticized for its overinclination towards human tenderness. But his nature predisposed him to feel this way: religious emotion took this form inside him. Is it not necessary to accept the artist's nature? As to my Requiem, perhaps I have also instinctively sought to escape from what is thought right and proper, after all the years of accompanying burial services on the organ! I know it all by heart. I wanted to write something different."1 - Gabriel Fauré

1Richard Bell. "Original score provides a clearer view of heaven." The Boston Globe. March 28, 1989: 25. Also cited at Notes on Fauré's Requiem by James Liu which states that "Fauré was interviewed by Louis Aguettant on July 12, 1902. [This quote] was originally published in Comoedia (1954, p. 6). The English translation is taken from Robert Orledge's biography.
