Euclid Avenue UCC update: 'Christ is our cornerstone'

EACC will hold its Maundy Thursday services at Plymouth Congregational UCC in Shaker Heights, with Good Friday services at University Circle United Methodist Church in Cleveland.

For Easter Sunday, the Rev. Curt Ackley, Western Reserve Association minister and executive, is asking each of the association's 80 member churches to send a group to join EACC members at First Church – and to bring their banners in a display of unity. "I told him there are 700 seats here," said Young. "He said they will all be filled."

As worshipers left the Palm Sunday service to gather in the fellowship hall downstairs, EACC member Al Parks approached a first-time EACC visitor. "Welcome," he said, extending his hand. "It's good to have you here. This was a very humbling service for us today. I hope you join us again."

There are actually TWO LOTS AVAILABLE TO US; one behind the police station and one accessible off of Reserve Court. You can actually go into the alley next to the Library and behind the police station, into the Library lot. From there you can drive through the exit onto Reserve Court and then into the area marked on the map below as more parking. Both of these lots are University Circle, Inc. lots that UCUMC has worked out agreements to use.

P.S. REMEMBER...you can also park on both sides of E. 107th by the Church and around the corner onto Parklane. You MUST NOT park in front of the Judson entrance, however.

UPDATE: Euclid Avenue Congregational Church to Worship at First Church Next 2 Sundays

UPDATE: Euclid Avenue Congregational Church

As the news and pictures of the devastating fire which has completely destroyed Euclid Avenue Congregational Church were reported, Dr. Chalker worked to be in touch with their pastor, Reverend Dr. Terri L. Young and other officials of the church. That afternoon he took Terri and Dean Sieck from their staff through the First Church sacred space at East 30th and Euclid.

Dr. Chalker is excited to report that while many details need to be finalized and others put in process, the congregation of Euclid Avenue Congregational Church will be worshiping beginning this Sunday – Palm Sunday – at the First Church sacred space at East 30th and Euclid and Easter Sunday.

"It is one of the ways in which God makes a way out of no way that UCUMC can be of significant support and assistance in our community," said Dr. Chalker. Stay tuned as this story develops.

Next Week: NOOMA Tomato... Have we missed out on how to truly live?

You're invited to our Young Adults Study at UCUMC!

And, don't forget... our class has been given a new home.  We're now meeting in what is known as the Youth Room, up the stairs to the right of the Sanctuary.  Just look for a bunch of comfy couches, and you'll be in the right place.

See you at 10:00 am this Sunday!

Tomato | 022 Rob Bell

We all get consumed with ourselves; sometimes we're not even aware of it. We learn from a young age that life is about winning and impressing. We pick up that our worth and value come from how good, how smart, and how skilled we are. So, we twist things in our favor, making us look like we have it all together. Every day we have the choice to prop up these false ideas about ourselves or to let go of them. Jesus invites these parts of us to die, the parts of us that tell us our worth comes from the things we say and do. Maybe it's only when we let these things die, that we truly begin to live.

Help clear out the First Church Building for new tenants and a SALE on Saturday, March 27th from 9am-12noon

Clear Out the First Church Building!

A pending lease of the building requires us to clean house (thoroughly, completely and immediately!). Please come to First Church NEXT MONDAY, March 22, anytime 10am-8pm. We need workers and boxes. Staff will delightedly welcome you and assign projects. We strongly request fresh muscle power for the after-work hours. Bring a friend and bring any boxes you can find. Pack a lunch. Snacks and drinks will be available, and so will casual dinner food. We will be discarding/recycling, as well as assembling items for sale.

There are many drawers, rooms and closets to empty. Special help is needed to remove/disassemble some fixtures from the second floor Sunday School area (movie seats, bulletin boards, etc.)  If you are willing to help with this task, please bring your toolbox!

Next Week: NOOMA You... Have we missed the point of our faith?

You | 015

Some of the central claims of the Christian faith are the source of many discussions and heated debates. But are we always debating the right things? Maybe some of our discussions would change significantly if we had more insight into the actual circumstances that surrounded the first people of the Christian movement--if we had a better understanding of the things they did in the context of the world they lived in. Maybe some of the claims of the Christian faith that we typically perceive to be unique aren't really that special at all. And at the same time, maybe we don't always put enough emphasis on the things that truly should matter in our lives.

Young Adults study: 10:00 am in the library across from the sanctuary... See you Sunday!

Hot meal programs for homeless are stretched thin in East Cleveland

If you're hungry or homeless in East Cleveland, finding a free hot supper on a cold night isn't easy, especially at the beginning of the month.

"If it's the beginning of the month, you either go hungry or you have to travel," said Brian Davis, director of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless.

Davis said the end-of-the-month meal schedules evolved years ago to serve poor people running short on their monthly allotments of food stamps.  But today, he said, poverty is much more pervasive, especially in places like East Cleveland.

Next Week: NOOMA Breathe... Do you breathe?

*TIME CHANGE* By popular demand, our Young Adults Study has moved to 10:00 am before worship in the Library.  See you Sunday!

Breathe | 014 Rob Bell

With everything that we've got going on every day, how many of us ever think about our breathing, about the meaning of breathing? Yet, for thousands of years, people have understood that our physical breath is a picture of a deeper spiritual reality. In the Bible, the word for "breath" is the same as the word for "spirit." There's an inherent dilemma at the core of what makes us human. We've all been created in the image of God and possess immense power and strength. And at the same time, our lives are incredibly vulnerable and fragile. Maybe if we had more insight into the meaning of breathing, we would better understand how God created us as human beings.
