Outreach Announcements From University Circle United Methodist Church

A tremendous THANK YOU is in order for all who participated in this year's Rebuilding Together Cleveland event on July 30. An energetic group of 25 volunteers from UCUMC scraped, painted and trimmed a home and detached garage in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood. Landscaping, fence repair, gutter repair, dormer gymnastics, and overcoming acrophobia were all necessary to complete the job. It was a long day but we received an extremely heartfelt thank you from the homeowner as the job came to an end. Most sincere thanks to all who devoted their time and sweat to this cause.

CLEVELAND FOODBANK: UCUMC HandsOn volunteers will help at the Cleveland Foodbank on Wed, August 31 from 6-8pm. To participate, volunteers must have participated in the HandsOn orientation program. Please contact Doug Blank (dblank3@gmail.com) for more information so you can become part of the HandsOn network and the growing outreach effort of our church. Four slots remain for volunteers to work the Cleveland Foodbank re-pack session. No training beyond the 1-hour HandsOn NEO orientation is required. Sign up using the Volunteer Opportunity Calendar at www.HandsOnNEO.org. NOTE: The website indicates that no availability exists for this event. This is true for everyone except UCUMC volunteers. Join the waiting list for the event, and as long as you are one of the next 4 from UCUMC to sign up, you will receive an e-mail within a few days indicating that you been accepted to work at the event. The event only appears full due to UCUMC's reserved slots. The slots are ours - let's fill them!

CRISIS IN THE HORN OF AFRICA: The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partner organizations to provide a regional response to the growing hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. Years of drought in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti have escalated in recent weeks causing widespread hunger and famine.

According to the United Nations, 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days and 11 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Somalia, where relief efforts have been hampered by ongoing violence and war, has seen tens of thousands of its weakened citizens flee to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia. The Somali population in three refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya, has increased by more than 30 percent in recent weeks, to 400,000 people.

Financial help is urgently needed. Checks can be made out to UMCOR Advance #982450 and placed in the collection plate when it is passed. Your designated gifts will be sent to UMCOR through our East Ohio Conference Office and our church will receive special credit on its annual apportionments – the amount we share with our connectional United Methodist system.

(UMCOR is the humanitarian relief and development agency of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR responds to natural or human-made disasters—events of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community's ability to recover on its own. UMCOR works to alleviate human suffering and deliver aid to people without regard to race, religion, politics, or gender and it does not tie the promise of its relief and development activities to any religious or political viewpoint. One hundred percent of all designated gifts and donations received by UMCOR is spent on the programs established for those in need. This can be accomplished because all of UMCOR’s administrative expenses are underwritten by the United Methodist Church and its 8.5 million members worldwide.)

WILLOW SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND TUTORS: Keep "reaching" and thinking about your potential to contribute. Dan Maly will soon be talking to individuals interested in making time to tutor young people at Willow School. The need is great and the impact is lifelong. We will also collect school supplies again this year; a specific list will be available in August but you are encouraged to take advantage of sales promotions on any basic school supplies.
