Middle School and High School Youth Announcements

"Red Tails" Movie Night for All Youth: On Saturday, January 28, 5:30-10pm, both Middle School and High School youth will see "Red Tails", a movie about the Tuskegee Airmen. Our beloved Art Saunders was an honored member of the Tuskegee Airmen. Seeing this movie is an opportunity to honor him and others who served the country in this way. Because the movie is rated PG-13 (for some sequences of war violence), any youth under the age of 13 must bring a signed permission slip in order to attend (see Pastor Sharon for permission slips). Those who are uncomfortable with the movie rating have the option to remain at the Garners' to view a different movie. Youth can be dropped off at the Garners' at 5:30 for pizza before we leave to view the movie at Crocker Park Cinema. After the movie there will be an opportunity for discussion before the youth are picked up from the Garners' at 10pm. Tickets are $10.50 per person. Please RSVP to Pastor Sharon or Dawn McElrath so that we can better plan for pizza and transportation.

Confirmation Update: If you are in 8th or 9th grade and are interested in being confirmed this May, please contact Pastor Sharon ASAP.

Middle School Youth Retreat: All 6th-8th Graders are encouraged to attend the winter retreat at Camp Aldersgate, February 24-26. Details are available from Pastor Sharon. Permission slip deadline is February 5.

Arthur Saunders was an original Tuskegee Airman and a leading architect: news obituary | cleveland.com

At age 90, Saunders still walked a few blocks daily along Superior Ave. from his apartment to his office. He died Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Stokes VA Medical Center, at 91.

In 2007, he told The Plain Dealer about his military career and could have been talking about his civilian one, too: "The hardest part was overcoming the prejudice. There was a great effort to make it difficult for us by creating unnecessary problems, with the intent of making us fail."

The slim six-footer said he was the first African-American architect with the state of Ohio as a client. He also designed the first home for an African-American family in Shaker Heights, starting the suburb toward national leadership in voluntary integration. He created more than 20 Cleveland churches, including Mt. Pleasant Church of Christ, and many multi-unit complexes, including Rockefeller Park Towers and the Eliza Bryant Home.

It's a sign: The University Circle United Methodist Church isn't delivering its message only from the pulpit these days. A new, state-of-the-art LED sign greets the many motorists who pass by the church daily.

The new sign was nearly two years in the making with various city permits needed for its design and placement.

"It's in such a marvelous location. We have 60,000 people go through there every day," said the pastor, the Rev. Ken Chalker.

It replaces two older-style signs, the kind for which letters were hand-placed to convey messages. Before those signs were removed, they carried this message: "Sign for sale: Inquire within."

No, the church wasn't selling "signs" from heaven. The actual signs are for sale. They're in storage. Asking price: $3,750 for one, $6,995 for both.

In effect, the Uptown area will be what amounts to a new downtown for the University Circle neighborhood on the east side of the city. Within the square mile of University Circle, and within easy walking distance of Uptown, are Case Western Reserve, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Music, University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History.
Spread across a campuslike expanse of green space, these institutions form a distinct economic microclimate that has fostered the highest growth in job numbers, income and residents in a city that lost 17 percent of its population from 2000 to 2010.
“There are 5,000 more jobs here than in 2005,” said Chris Ronayne, an urban planner who is president of University Circle Inc., a nonprofit community service organization that has helped manage the area’s development. “About 50,000 people work here. The number of residents grew 11 percent since 2000. And there are 10,000 people who live here now.”

Infants, Children and Youth

Infant and Toddler Care will be available on Christmas Eve for the 4pm and 8pm services. Please bring children ages 5 and younger to the care room on the lower level – an usher can direct you. Parents also have the option of taking children to our "Wiggle Room", which is explained below.

Children and Youth (grades K-12) are invited to attend worship with their families on Saturday, December 24, Sunday, December 25 and Sunday, January 1. Sunday School (K-5), Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12) classes will not meet on Christmas or New Year's Day. Classes for all ages will resume on Sunday, January 8.

Wiggle Room: Parents attending worship with young children are invited to be with their children in our “wiggle room”, across the hall from the sanctuary. Toys and activities for young children will be provided there, as well as audio/video feed from the sanctuary so that parents may view/hear the service.

Christmas Day and New Year's Day

Our child care providers will be celebrating with their own families on Christmas Day (Sunday, December 25) and on New Year's Day (Sunday, January 1.) Child care for infants and toddlers will resume in the nursery on Sunday, January 8. Sunday classes for all children and all youth will also resume on Sunday, January 8.

Next Sunday, December 11, University Circle UMC will introduce its new Artist Series

Featuring the creations of various artists on display in the hallways outside the sanctuary. As the initial exhibit introducing this series, "BRUSHES WITH AMERICA" will debut, with the works of realist illustrator and designer Ron Beckham.

Posters designed to promote this opening are available in the narthex, hallway and office, and if you can hang them up where you work, live or frequent, please pick up a few before leaving today.

You are invited to participate in next Sunday’s potluck in the Great Hall following worship. As part of this gathering, Ron Beckham will be introduced and respond to questions about his work. He’ll also be available with the display following the potluck luncheon.

Ron’s hometown is Cincinnati, and he dedicated much of the last decade to overseeing the retail-store look of Cleveland-based American Greetings. He has received numerous honors and awards for his designs and illustrations and has gained growing recognition for his techniques with watercolor, oil and acrylic illustration. He looks forward to his time with us with great anticipation.

For much of the last decade he managed the retail-store look of American Greetings and most recently has been employed as Creative Director for Burt's Bees in Raleigh, North Carolina. Ron has received numerous honors and awards, including from Print, Artist's Magazine, Graphic Design USA, Cincinnati Art Directors Club, Columbus Society of Communicating Arts and the Society of Illustrators.

This gathering celebrates the giving spirit of our congregation with food and fellowship and an opportunity to create some hand-made gifts to share with our church neighbors. Plan to be a part of this festive gathering in the Great Hall following worship.

Four Spiritual Exercises to help us prepare for the coming of Christmas

(Presented as a portion of Dr. Chalker's Sermon on Sunday, November 27, 2011)

1. Three minutes of prayer each day. If your mind wanders and all sorts of other thoughts come into your mind, try WRITING your prayer. It doesn't have to be longer than a sentence and it doesn't have to be suitable for publishing. JUST WRITE YOUR PRAYER and then read it out loud.

2. Expect that every day God will put into your mind the name of some person whose life you can enrich by a phone call, note, e-mail, tweet or some other way to offer them an expression of regard, support or encouragement.

3. At the end of each day, think about one thing that has been an accomplishment which God has enabled through you. It doesn't have to be accomplishing world peace. Think on some accomplishment in your family, home, work, among friends or community – SOMETHING you are pleased has occurred through you. God has used you for a loving purpose. Remember it. God uses us for loving purposes. Anticipate it!

4. Keep a spiritual treasure chest. This could include pictures, notes, inspirational writings or precious objects that REMIND you of a loved one or some special time of joy in your life. This treasure chest can include whatever has touched you and stirs your soul. Particularly when you are having a difficult day, take out that treasure chest. Open it and reflect upon the things you have placed within it.

New members welcomed to University Circle United Methodist Church

On Sundays, October 16 and 23, 2011, the University Circle United Methodist Church family welcomed thirteen new members. They joined after a series of orientation events during which they learned about Methodism and about UCUMC, its leadership, structure and the combined histories of our two churches. During these events they also met with their Faith Friends who introduced them to the congregation on these New Member Sundays.

DOROTHY ADAMS lives in Cleveland and has been a long time attendee of First Church and UCUMC . (In fact folks were surprised that she was not already an “official” member!) She has sung with the Chancel Choir and has participated in other activities over the years. Barbara Williams serves as her Faith Friend.

MICHELLE BROWN is a student majoring in dance at Kent State University. Her Faith Friend is Lalene Kay.

BRANDI DOBBS has moved back to the area from Washington, DC, and works in the medical profession as a Nurse Practitioner. She lives in Cleveland Heights with her baby daughter Indira, and her Faith Friend is Anna Jones.

ANN and KERMIT GREENEISEN are transferring their membership from Garfield Memorial UMC and have been attending UCUMC for the past year. Ann is a veteran community volunteer and Kermit is retired from G.E. and the Navy. They live in Pepper Pike and their Faith Friends are Barbara and Dean Cox.

KATIE JAGUSCH is a project engineer with URS Corporation. She and her fiancé, Brandon Davis, will be married at UCUMC in February. Katie lives in Fairview Park and is transferring from Mayfield UMC. Megan Blank is her Faith Friend.

CARL JONES, JR. is the son and brother of members Melvin Jones and Anna Jones, respectively. Lives in Cleveland Heights and has been attending UCUMC for some time and is transferring membership from St. Thomas Catholic Church. Carl does free-lance painting and is a cook and Doug Craver is his Faith Friend.

NATHANIEL MOTTA needs little introduction, having served as Director of Music and Arts for both First Church and UCUMC. He lives in Cleveland Heights and is involved in numerous music and drama endeavors in NE Ohio. His Faith Friend is fellow Inner Circle Jazz Combo member, David Kay.

AMANDA NICOL lives in Shaker Heights and is in non-profit management with Flat Rock Homes. She transfers from Church of the Good Shepherd in Lyndhurst and her Faith Friend is Della Magee.

DEIRDRE PERRY is also a familiar face in the Chancel Choir, having attended First Church and now UCUMC for many years. She lives in Cleveland, is employed at Karamu and her Faith Friend is Chiq Montgomery.

ELEANOR SHELTON lives in East Cleveland and is a retired Cleveland Municipal Schools special education teacher. She has been participating in worship and other activities for several years and transfers her membership from Windermere UMC. Mary Forbes is her Faith Friend.

PENELOPE TALLEY is the daughter of member Willard Talley and has been attending regularly and become involved in Chancel Choir and other programs at UCUMC. She is retired, living in Cleveland and is transferring membership from New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland Heights. Her Faith Friend is Judi Arnold Sims.

PETER TALLEY also claims Willard Talley as his father and is the brother of new member, Penny Talley. His Faith Friend is Pete Smith, and he is transferring his membership from Greater Faith Baptist Church.

We, the caring people of University Circle UMC, would like to provide one set of hat plus gloves/mittens for each of the 221 Willow School students in Pre-Kindergarten through grade 8! Beyond that, we want to REACH out to the Women's Shelter with offerings of more hats and mittens. Join your church family and friends for a morning of holiday fun and decorate your very own gingerbread house for Christmas! We'll supply everything you need - gingerbread, frosting and lots of candy - to create your very own gingerbread house and take it home for Christmas! Last year, over 100 children, teens, parents and grandparents filled the Great Hall, decorating unique and festive houses. It's great fun for everyone - young and young-at-heart!

This year, proceeds from our event will benefit Rebuilding Together Cleveland. RTC's mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners (particularly the elderly, disabled or families with children) live in warmth, safety and independence.

Anyone who wishes to decorate a house at the event on December 3rd must purchase a ticket in advance. (There is no charge for those who attend but do not decorate a house.) Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the church office before and after worship today. You may also call Heather at the church office, 216-421-1200 to make a reservation. If you are unable to attend the event but would like to support this project, donations will gratefully be accepted to help defray the cost of materials. DON'T BRAVE BLACK FRIDAY ALONE! Want the deals but dread standing in line alone, bored, with nothing to do? Join us for a morning of Christmas gift shopping and brunch, and give to great causes as well. This year UCUMC will support Willow School and the Women's Shelter with sets of hats and gloves/mittens; our goal is to provide a set to each of the 216 students and as many women as we can. UCUMC supporters will tackle Golden Gate Mall bright and early at 6am. Bring your own coffee---donuts are provided! Together we will search for winter outwear and take care of our personal Christmas shopping as well. Our morning concludes with brunch somewhere nearby. High School Youth Group Kickoff!

DAWN AND FRED McELRATH are our new High School Youth Group Coordinators!
They will develop and lead educational, spiritual, mission, recreational and fellowship opportunities for youth in grades 9-12 on Sunday mornings and beyond.

The McElraths are long-time members of our faith family. Dawn and Fred were married by Dr. Chalker at First Church 21 years ago. They are the proud parents of Fred, Jr. (23), Angela (20) and Brianna (13), and loving grandparents of 15-month-old Jamir. Dawn is a project specialist in Heart and Vascular Research at the Cleveland Clinic, where she has been employed for the past 16 years. She coached cheerleading for girls ages 9-13 for eight years, recently resigning so that she could attend all of Brianna's 8th grade activities and spend as much time as possible with baby Jamir. Dawn loves singing in our Gospel Choir and dancing with the Liturgical Dancers. Dawn has known many of our teens since they were babies, as she volunteered in the nursery and Sunday School at First Church for many years! Fred works as a Warehouse attendant at Johnsonite in Middlefield, Ohio, where he has been employed for 11 years. He coaches basketball for 7th and 8th grade boys and has served as a mentor to young men through the Distinguished Gentlemen Organization. Dawn and Fred bring both vision and passion for working with young people to their new roles as coordinators of our high school youth group.

We look forward to their leadership in the coming year!

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS BEGIN on Sunday, November 13.
Our new UCUMC High School Youth Group, under the leadership of Dawn and Fred McElrath, will meet for the first time and all youth in grades 9-12 are welcome! We will meet in the "step down room" next to the gym at 11am. Following worship on November 13, all high school youth and their parents are invited to meet with Dawn and Fred to discuss plans for the coming year. We will meet in the Reception Room and a light lunch will be served. Let's Celebrate Church Street Ministries!

On Wednesday evening, November 9, Dr. Chalker will be the guest speaker at a dinner celebrating the 25th anniversary of Church Street Ministries. The catered meal will be held at Berea High School, 165 East Bagley Road, Berea 44017. Doors open at 6pm and dinner is served at 6:30pm. $15 tickets may be purchased in the church office following the worship service today. Checks may be made payable to "Church Street Ministries." Deadline for ticket sales is October 30.

Church Street Ministries is an ecumenical outreach with a threefold mission. The first is the Second Mile Thrift Shops in Berea, which provide a way to transfer donated goods into funding the outreach missions. The second is the Outreach Mission itself, which serves the needs of preadolescent, at risk, chemically dependent, homeless, transients, refugees, those in need of emergency assistance, and counsel. The third is to educate people in the community about those in need, training volunteers in the shops, and involving people in outreach opportunities in the community.

The "Hands On" team of UCUMC's Committee on Outreach and Local Mission continues to move forward with its mission of reaching out to serve the various needs in our community. During the month of October, the "Hands On" team joined the Cleveland Foodbank in organizing food donations for distribution throughout Cleveland, as well as MedWish International, where our volunteers assisted in the organization and preparation of donated medical supplies for international distribution to countries in need.

UCUMC has reserved multiple slots for participation in the following HandsOn projects:

• Tuesday, November 8, 5:45-7:45pm
Bingo Night with Seniors at St. Augustine

• Thursday, November 17, 6:15-8pm
Project Play at the West Side Community House
We will assist in activities for children while parents attend various workshops and meetings.

Working with the UCUMC "Hands On" Team offers an excellent opportunity for meeting members of our wonderful, diverse congregation, while providing much needed services throughout the Cleveland area. October 2011 Administrative Update From kay Hogg

Entrance and Hallways
Notice the new carpeting that was installed this week in the E. 107th lower entrance, up the stairs to the main floor and throughout the L-shaped hallways leading to the administrative offices, parlor and ladies' restroom. New coat racks have also been added and a new bulletin board is coming. Wall-mounted racks that will be used to display art work are on order. The carpeting at the entrance and on the stairs is industrial "walk-off" carpeting that removes dirt and water from the soles of shoes as people enter the building and before they walk onto the lighter hallway carpeting. All the carpeting is in large squares which can be easily removed if soiled to be cleaned and reinstalled or replaced.

Education Areas (Mezzanine Level)
In the next two weeks, new carpeting will be installed in the educational rooms and in the large mezzanine hallway and steps that lead to the gymnasium. The bathroom on this level will be industrially cleaned and painted. Once the carpeting is installed, classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned and furniture and supplies will be set up. At that time, all storage boxes which are currently in the mezzanine will be removed. Volunteer help with the cleaning and setting up of these classrooms will be greatly appreciated. Please notify the church office if you are available during daytime hours to help. Your name will be added to a list and you will be contacted as soon as the work can be scheduled.

Staff Changes
Due to the current and potential future use of our building for church programming and use by external agencies, two staff changes were made this week that will allow us to provide improved building security/custodial assignments and more efficient and effective deployment of staff. These changes are being made without any impact to our personnel budget.

Desmond Clark, who cares for us and the building as a custodial and security employee, has been assigned to a regular schedule as a second-shift employee. He will work approximately 3-8pm Monday through Thursday, 9am-5pm Friday and continue his Sunday morning rotation as well. Karl Clark and Hassan Lee will continue as our first-shift Care personnel.

Andria Jamison has begun a new position at UCUMC as Kitchens & Food Service Coordinator. She will be part of our Administrative staff, but no longer a member of our Care Team. Andria is uniquely qualified for this job as she has held similar positions at several churches through the years and was originally hired to do this for Epworth-Euclid UMC. In this new position, Andria is responsible for preparing food for Sundays and special church programs like our new Wednesday night renewal/supper events. Our intention for Sundays is that food will soon be available to purchase for a nominal fee – just to cover expenses – from the kitchen in the Great Hall, 9:30am to 1pm. The menu will include breakfast and light lunch items so that people who are arriving early or staying for meetings following worship have eating options – all available at the church kitchen. This will be an evolving effort which will start small but hopefully grow and provide a wonderful service to a growing church family. As part of her responsibilities, Andria will prepare the Sunday reception in the Parlor following worship and keep the first-floor and Great Hall kitchens clean, organized, and stocked.

We are delighted to have the kinds of Administrative staff members who are supportive and flexible and make it possible for us to use their talents in new and effective ways.

Richard Evan Francies Memorial Scheduled for 4pm, Sunday, October 16 at University Circle UMC

r. Francies worked his way up from an Installer to and Engineer/Manager for the former Ohio Bell Telephone Company in Cleveland, OH, from 1946 until his retirement in 1981. He devoted 35 years of his career to the Phone Company. He was a proud veteran of the US Army, Signal Corps and a Prisoner of War for the 3 ½ years of World War II. In 1937, he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps at 18, asking to be stationed in the Philippines to get as far away as he could from a first Sgt. he hated at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He spent 2 years as a Tech. Sgt. in the Philippines, building radio stations and maintaining the equipment. He was just 3 days away from going home to the United States when the Pearl Harbor attack took place on December 7, 1941. He was a survivor of the "Bataan Death March", Japanese "Hell Ship" and slave labor camps. He was part of the "Battling Bastards of Bataan" - American and Filipino servicemen who fought in a doomed holding action at the start of America's war in the Pacific. Many times, as other prisoners escaped, he was threatened with the firing squad. He and his men were doing radio work for the Japanese, therefore, their lives spared. They also sabotaged many of those radios, helping with the effort in the Philippines. Mr. Francies was a 1936 graduate of East High School in Euclid. He was active in the Kiwanis Club of Cleveland Heights, was a Ham Radio Operator and was very active in POW reunions. He has returned 6 times to the Philippines to join his friends and fellow POW's. He enjoyed the people of the Philippines, as they risked their lives to help the prisoners survive. The flag flying in front of the Cleveland Heights City Hall now flies twenty-four hours per day in his honor. He is survived by his daughters Susan (John) Heaton of N. Barrington, IL and Katharine (Kent) Kleiva of Palatine, IL, grandchildren Richard Evan, his namesake, Laura, Kristen and Kate. He also leaves his loving companion Margaret "Peg" Skelly of Willoughby, OH. His parents William Evan and Edna Marie (nee: Richards) Francies and sister Eleanor Smith are deceased. Private family burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC at a later date.

Architect Ralph Johnson's new Tinkham Veale University Center at CWRU will bring 21st-century flair to University Circle | cleveland.com

Born out of the union of Western Reserve University and the Case Institute of Technology in 1967, CWRU has grown over the decades without a strong campus center to unify its two halves.

That’s about to change. The university plans to break ground next spring on the $50 million Tinkham Veale University Center, a centrally located building intended to give CWRU a 24/7 student hangout, a home for student organizations, a jumping-off point for campus tours and a big community gathering space.

The design for the 82,000-square-foot building, released to The Plain Dealer by the university, has a decidedly 21st-century look, with thrusting, wedge-like shapes and sloping green roofs rising two stories out of the ground.

Given its location northeast of Severance Hall between Bellflower Road, Euclid Avenue and East Boulevard, the center will be a highly visible new landmark in University Circle, Cleveland’s cultural, educational and medical hub.

JUDGE JOAN SYNENBERG of the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, is the MENS' Forum Speaker at 9:30am next Sunday, October 9. Judge Joan Synenberg says that there is no room for politics on the bench. Her philosophy is that people are complex and that the "Law invites you to take a look at them individually." All are welcome to hear this engaging and accomplished woman.

RECYCLING, READY OR NOT: Some people are more commited to earth-friendly policies than others but everyone at UCUMC needs to be aware of a few practices in place here. The main office has blue "waste cans" which are used for recycling paper and cardboard only. A blue container between the kitchenette and Reception Room is for plastic, glass and cans only; please do not place paper or garbage in this container. Finally, you may place any unwanted portions of your worship bulletin into a tall basket at the back of the sanctuary or in the main hallway or office. Thank you for your cooperation!

YOUTH GROUP TRIP TO CEDAR POINT: All Middle School and High School youth are invited to join in the fun for a trip to Cedar Point on Sunday, October 16. Cost is $25. Permission slips must be turned in by Sunday, October 9th. Contact Pastor Sharon for additional details.

LADIES' LUNCH BUNCH will meet on Tuesday, September 27, at Noon in the Church Parlor. This informal group meets the fourth Tuesday of each month for a brown bag luncheon and fellowship. No reservations are necessary – just come and enjoy fun conversation and making new friends.

RESTROOM INFORMATION: The men's restroom on the main floor is still under renovation and is not available for use today. Please use the restroom between the church office and kitchenette on the main floor, or the restroom on the lower level near the gym. Refurbishing and industrial cleaning of the restroom on the mezzanine level continues. The women's restroom on the main floor next to the Parlor has a new entryway but is available for use today. Thank you for your patience!

NAMETAGS are available in a new hallway rack. Everyone is encouraged to wear a tag and introduce yourself to others. New or replacement tags can be requested by filling out a yellow card from the rack and/or stopping by the office.

Steeple, Roofs, Masonry and Water Problems
Our steeple roof was damaged in a spring windstorm and it has been repaired mostly with insurance funds. While workers were on the steeple, the tower lights were replaced and the walkway around the steeple and additional masonry work are also undergoing repairs.

First Floor Men's Room and Isaac Morris Room Construction
Work is now underway and should be finished this week.

Lower Entrance and First-floor Hallways & Miscellaneous Items
1. A new entrance for the ladies' room on the main level has been completed. New hallway carpeting should be installed this week and the paneled wall in the reception room has been painted.
2. New coat racks will be installed where the moveable racks are now located and new bulletin boards will be hung in the area by the new water fountain. (The wall behind the water fountain will also be painted to match the rest of the walls.)
3. A "rotating art" program is being organized to allow different types of artwork to be shown on walls of both hallways as sort of a traveling art gallery concept. There is no cost to the church and it will benefit artists with a local connection. We will have work of Artist Ron Beckham on display beginning in November for at least two months. More information will be provided in the weeks ahead.
4. Striping of our gym floor has been completed.
5. Our electronic sign is still scheduled for installation but once again we've experienced some delays. We are hoping to see it appear in our front lawn in October!

Thank you to all who served (and to those who signed up to serve but who were not called upon) the Cleveland Foodbank through UCUMC's partnership with HandsOn Northeast Ohio on August 31! Larry & Elaine Myers, Judy Sockman, Marina Grant, Jan Kimball, Zach Lewis and Rochelle McNorton sorted and re-packed pounds and pounds of meat for local families, kitchens, and pantries.

If this sounds like a fun and productive evening, you're right. That's why we're doing it again on Wednesday, October 12 at 6pm. For those who prefer weekend opportunities, we will be serving with MedWish on Saturday, October 1 at 10am, sorting and packing medical supplies. MedWish responds to crises across the globe by sending medical supplies. Sign up for either or both of these events at www.HandsOnNEO.org!

Director of the new Cleveland Playhouse production of "The Life of Galileo," discusses the significance of the life of natural philosopher Galileo who was persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church for his public declarations about his scientific discoveries. October 26: Inner Visions of Cleveland – Jan Thrope, activist, author and founder of Inner Visions of Cleveland, presents grassroots stories of truth and hope she has written and photographed from the perspective of people living in some of the most economically challenged areas of Cleveland's east side urban core. These are stories of every-day life in the city. But they are also about the power of what happens when neighbors connect to neighbors to create the life they envision. OUTREACH & LOCAL MISSIONS Support College Students at CWRU and Tri-C Metro

During worship on September 18 and 25, our Committee on Outreach will collect a special offering to support UPCaM (United Protestant Campus Ministries) for programming it provides to students Case Western Reserve University and Cuyahoga Community College-Metro Campus. UpCam's mission is "to develop Christian faith, Christian leadership, and Christian community on our college campuses by providing opportunities for community service, study, worship, fellowship, and pastoral care." It ministers to students through worship, Bible studies, national and global mission trips, international student support groups, spiritual growth opportunities, volunteer opportunities, student leadership, and one-on-one mentoring.

We can help support UPCaM in several ways:

• Contribute financial resources for the programming efforts of the UPCaM organization.

• Contribute financial resources specifically designated for the annual mission trip.

(Designated contributions can be placed in the offering plate this Sunday and next. Please make your checks payable to UCUMC with UPCaM in the memo line.)

• Make a dessert for an upcoming UPCaM meal. Several members of our church and our Committee on Outreach are preparing an evening meal for students at Case on Wednesday evening September 28. Immediately following the dinner at The Interfaith Center, our group will join students at their weekly worship service. A dessert volunteer sign-up sheet is in the church office. (Desserts need to arrive at the church office on Wed., September 28 by 5pm.)

Join your church family for a night at the theater to see the Cleveland Playhouse production of The Life of Galileo, David Edgar's adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's electrifying masterpiece. The play spies through Galileo's telescope to observe his thrilling inventions, radical discoveries and sometimes tempestuous personal life. His passion to unearth truth through science clashes with the laws of the Italian Government and the religious views of the Vatican. Galileo pursues his research no matter what the cost to his family, while his apprentice, Andrea Sarti, loses faith in his mentor. Finally, Galileo must choose between his life and proclaiming the truth of his scientific findings. The play presents the startlingly relevant tale of history's most famous conflict between reason and faith.

Two members of our UCUMC family are involved in this production. Nathaniel Motta, our Director of Music, is the Assistant Director. Aric Floyd, a member of our High School Youth, is in the cast, playing the role of Andrea Sarti, Galileo's apprentice.

The Life of Galileo is the first event in a series of exciting programs at UCUMC that will give us an opportunity to think about reason, faith, science and the heavens!

Join us to see the play at the Allen Theater, new home of the Cleveland Playhouse. We have a terrific opportunity to hear a pre-show talk by Nathan Motta that highlights the life of Galileo and the historical context in which this play was written. Nate's talk begins at 6 pm, and the play begins at 7pm.

A Wednesday evening program on October 12 will provide an opportunity for everyone (whether you've seen the play or not!) to gather for a presentation and dialogue about Galileo, his revolutionary ideas and the conflict between reason and faith!

Tickets for the play are $34 for adults and $15 for students of all ages. They will be on sale before and after worship today and next Sunday, outside the church office. For more than a decade, our Men Engaged in Needed Services (MENS) group has put their considerable talents to work each September to prepare a fantastic feast of franks. If you have any doubt about how "gourmet" a hot dog can be, come and see the amazing spread of condiments and toppings which will surely transform your impressions of this all-American culinary favorite. And, if this isn't enough, there will be fun surprises in store especially for children. Plan to join us in the Great Hall following worship. A traditional fall event you won't want to miss!

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH – LET’S TALK!
We are creating a new High School Youth Group at UCUMC, and we need your input to create an exciting, fun and meaningful program! - Youth in grades 6 through 8 will meet for class at 11am in the Youth Room at the top of the stairs next to the Chapel.

There will be a special budget meeting of the University Circle United Methodist Women in the Yoder Room following worship. After a brief dedication of this year’s pledges, the 2011 budget will be presented for discussion and approval. All ladies of the church are encouraged to attend this important meeting. The on-going special mission project, Little Dresses and Boys’ Shorts for Africa, will be on display. Copies of the budget are available today in the gymnasium following worship for your consideration prior to the meeting.

WILLOW SCHOOL TUTORS
Dan Maly is talking to individuals interested in making time to tutor young people at Willow School. The need is great and the impact is lifelong. Look for Dan in the Chapel following worship.

GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE POTLUCK
GSA is Moving Forward! Three summer potlucks helped the group to organize and make progress in many exciting ways. Please join us! Four areas of interest are identified: 1) EDUCATION; 2) SUPPORT for LGBTQ persons/families/straight allies; 3) OUTREACH to the community; and 4) ADVOCACY for human rights. The next meeting is a potluck following worship to list specific programming (big or small!) we might consider. The North Coast District of the United Methodist Church and Enhancement Ministries, Inc have partnered with the Cleveland Foodbank to bring fresh produce and a Mobile Food Pantry to the North Broadway neighborhood.

Fresh produce is only available 1st and 3rd Tuesdays (4:30-6:30PM) in August and September. The Mobile Food Pantry is available the 3rd Friday (4PM - 6PM) of each month starting August 19th.

Distributions are made on a first come first served bases. NO pre-RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Clients should bring their own bags and be willing to complete a self disclosure family income form onsite.

A tremendous THANK YOU is in order for all who participated in this year's Rebuilding Together Cleveland event on July 30. An energetic group of 25 volunteers from UCUMC scraped, painted and trimmed a home and detached garage in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood. Landscaping, fence repair, gutter repair, dormer gymnastics, and overcoming acrophobia were all necessary to complete the job. It was a long day but we received an extremely heartfelt thank you from the homeowner as the job came to an end. Most sincere thanks to all who devoted their time and sweat to this cause.

CLEVELAND FOODBANK: UCUMC HandsOn volunteers will help at the Cleveland Foodbank on Wed, August 31 from 6-8pm. To participate, volunteers must have participated in the HandsOn orientation program. Please contact Doug Blank (dblank3@gmail.com) for more information so you can become part of the HandsOn network and the growing outreach effort of our church. CRISIS IN THE HORN OF AFRICA: The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partner organizations to provide a regional response to the growing hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. Years of drought in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti have escalated in recent weeks causing widespread hunger and famine.

According to the United Nations, 29,000 children under the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days and 11 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Somalia, where relief efforts have been hampered by ongoing violence and war, has seen tens of thousands of its weakened citizens flee to neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia. The Somali population in three refugee camps in Dadaab, Kenya, has increased by more than 30 percent in recent weeks, to 400,000 people.

Financial help is urgently needed. Checks can be made out to UMCOR Advance #982450 and placed in the collection plate when it is passed. Your designated gifts will be sent to UMCOR through our East Ohio Conference Office and our church will receive special credit on its annual apportionments – the amount we share with our connectional United Methodist system.

Outreach and Local Missions calls you to reach out to the Norma Herr Women's Center, a shelter for women in Cleveland. Ms. Pat Nelson has devotedly remained in contact with them, delivering our donations and leading inspirational singing. The shelter has been relocated and undergone administrative changes. The monthly shelter visiting day for UCUMC has been changed to the 4th Sunday of the month at 3pm, by request of the participants. Therefore, the next meeting will be held on Sunday July 24th from 3-4:30pm at Norma Herr Women's Center, 2227 Payne Avenue, Cleveland, 44114. Come along to extend some cheer and sing a few songs.

We will visit the shelter on the 4th Sunday of each month. Donations of toiletries and healthy treats are greatly appreciated; contributions are collected in the church office.

Gale Force Winds

Folks in the know along the Western basin of Lake Erie say that they haven’t seen anything like it in more than 10 years. The present cold front with its continuous, strong, southwest winds – and gusts approaching 50mph – has literally blown the water east.

Boats in the marina where we keep our boat are either in the mud or lying on their sides on dry land. The water has gone out from underneath them…as much as 6 feet of it! One might think someone pulled a plug on Lake Erie! Actually, the water has been “sloshed” east. I hope it comes back soon!

In addition to the weather story today, the news brings reports of Iran’s successful launching of medium range rockets. The country seeks to militarily powerful.

Perhaps a true lesson in real power is in the forces which can take a Great Lake and “drain” its waters. We need perspective in life. It would make all of us more humble before the Creator of this universe and the Creator’s power.

There is an ancient story of how God delivered God’s people from slavery in Egypt by parting the waters of the Red Sea. My view of Lake Erie’s Western Basin this afternoon teaches me that such stories of the workings of God are absolutely true. Talk about power.

Vatican document on the reorganisation of U.S. dioceses - Vatican Insider

A "classic" negative example of the reorganisation linked to the economic problems is that of Cleveland, where the Holy See has decided to send an apostolic visit, or rather, an investigation to look into whether the decisions taken by the Bishop Ordinary Gerard Lennon were adequate. He announced that 29 parishes will close and another 41 will be merged. The restructuring plan which will cut 52 parishes out of 224 is already in effect. Other cities in which word about closure has been heard are Camden, New Jersey, Allentown, Pennsylvania and New York City. The reasons that prompted the decision to close parishes in Cleveland have been the flow of population to outlying areas, the financial difficulties that have seen 42% of parish budgets finish in the red and the shortage of priests. Now this last point is questioned by the Vatican and the apostolic visit will serve to ascertain the facts. The Vatican has asked Lennon to stop his policy of savage cuts. In Boston, amongst many other controversies, he closed 60 parishes. So far the Vatican has not had any luck.

Library changes underway at University Circle United Methodist Church

The room designated as our church library just down the hallway from the church office is undergoing a face lift. It is being converted to a family-friendly room for persons with infants and toddlers to use on Sunday mornings, complete with an audio-video feed of the worship service. During other times, it will continue to be used as a multi-purpose room for meetings and small events. Many of the resources currently housed in the library room will be moved to the "Seminar Room" inside the chapel.

Berea's Grindstone winners give back to the city

BEREA This year’s Grindstone Award winners offer a heartfelt reason why they chose to live — and volunteer — in Berea.

“It really feels like home,” said Elaine Myers, who, together with husband Larry, was a 2011 Grindstone Award winner.

The couple will be honored at the April 19 award dinner at the Crown Plaza Airport Hotel.

Each year, the Berea Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations to name someone as the winner each year. Several nominated the two for the award.

“Whenever there is a Berea community event, the Myers will probably not only be in attendance but will be there assisting in some capacity,” wrote Harl and Barbara Evans. “They are tireless supporters of our community and its residents.”

Rebuilding Together, Cleveland - Saturday, July 30, 8am-4pm
Volunteers from "Rebuilding Together" will be painting and fixing up several homes in the Cleveland area. If you would like to be part of the UCUMC work group, please sign up in the church office. Berea Children's Home
Thanks to everyone who sold and purchased Cleveland Indians tickets to support the Berea Children's Home. The $500 given here at UCUMC helped the Berea Children's Home receive $28,000 from the Indians organization.

University Circle UMC Communication and Music & Arts Surveys Results

In recent months, two surveys of our congregation were taken; one to identify how members most often receive communication about church events and the other to determine hopes and dreams for the music and arts program of the church. The staff and committees of the church are grateful to all respondents for providing suggestions that will help direct future programming.

Communication Survey
Nearly half of the worshiping congregation responded to the survey (more than 130 persons). Only one was received from a person less than 20 years of age. The largest group of respondents was between the ages of 51 and 70 (49%), while 8% were in the 31-40 age group, 14% in the 41-50 age group, and 27% in the 71+ age group. Of all the respondents, 71% indicated that they attend weekly and 27% attend twice a month. Of the 27% who attend twice a month or less, half were less than 50 years of age. The largest percentage of respondents live within 5-25 miles of the church, 16% live within 5 miles and 9% live more than 25 miles from the church.

The survey results showed that our Sunday bulletin is the number-one way people obtain information about church events and the number-one way they prefer to receive information (84%). The next highest communication tools were our web site and electronic newsletter. Although our newspaper, Outlook, is the least used tool, it is mailed every other month and therefore typically provides information about what has happened at the church rather than what is about to happen. Interestingly, 65% of our survey respondents asked for some kind of monthly news communication. It was also apparent from the results that a postal mailing of current church news and upcoming events is needed for persons who do not use computers.

As a result of this survey, the Outlook will soon become a monthly publication that persons can choose to receive on-line or have mailed. It will still be published by the publishing house of The United Methodist Church because they can do so much more affordably than we can. The subscription list will be reduced to the minimum allowable number to save mailing costs. Every effort will continue to be made to make our weekly electronic newsletter and bulletin announcements user-friendly.

Music & Arts Survey
This survey was completed by members of chancel, gospel and bell choirs, parents of singing children, youth and also by congregational members who do not participate in any of the church's performing arts. An overwhelming theme reported in the survey was an appreciation for the variety of music found at UCUMC (styles, composers, performances, instruments, etc.). Some persons requested more upbeat (less slow) hymns, and others want more well-known, traditional hymns. Some also mentioned that every verse of a hymn does not need to be sung.

In terms of musical hopes and dreams for our arts program, the survey comments reflected the diversity of our church membership. Comments ranged from, "Please give us less 'high church' music," "Too much traditional church music alienates me and makes me wonder why I am here," and "I want music that is uplifting and joyful; not 'I am waiting to die music'" to "We need more standard classics such as Messiah, Creation, and other music from Beethoven, Mozart and Bach."

Requests ranged from more gospel music that raises the roof to more orchestral music during services. Desires for opportunities that involve our youth, the addition of more contemporary Christian rock, jazz music and more contemporary dance were also on the wish list! Our Director of Music and Arts, Nathaniel Motta, has his work cut out for him as he attempts to satisfy all these varied wants and needs!

Case Western Reserve University: Trendiest "School that Flies Under the Academic Radar...But Shouldn't - HuffPost College

Ranked the #41 best national university by the U.S. News, this school definitely flies under the academic radar. But with a student body whose top majors include biomedical engineering, there's no denying that Case kids are smart. Very smart. Yet we rarely hear about Case in the news. Until, that is, the numbers for 2011 applications came rolling in. Case's applications had sky-rocketed by 44.51%. Rick Bischoff, vice president for enrollment at the Ohio university, attributed the dramatic rise to recruitment. He said counselors visited 900 high schools, compared with 300 high schools three years ago. In addition, the university reached out earlier and more frequently to potential applicants through increased email and other communications. Still, with an increase that large, we think word of Case's beautiful campus, fiber-optic gigabit Ethernet (for all those future Case engineering majors out there) and expansive academic and research opportunities finally began to reach the masses, drawing in more and more of the goal-oriented, self-motivated students that typify the Case student body.

The 42nd Session of The East Ohio Annual Conference Report

The United Methodist Church began as a movement and loose network of local societies with a mission. It has grown into one of the most carefully organized and largest denominations in the world. We are a "connectional" organization in which all our churches in America and worldwide are bound together by a common mission and governance. Local churches are part of an area group called a District; ours is the North Coast District. Districts are grouped by region and the North Coast District is part of the East Ohio Conference. This Conference meets annually to discuss general business matters and to take action on specific social and church-related issues. Clergypersons and an equal number of elected lay delegates attend the annual conference session.

The 42nd Session of The East Ohio Annual Conference met at Lakeside, OH, from June 13-16. The Session, with a theme of "If We Are the Body…," was called to order by Bishop John Hopkins at 9am on Monday morning, followed by a traditional Service of Commemoration and Holy Communion. For a full report, please go to the Conference web page at EOCUMC.com. There you will find summaries of all Worship and Business sessions and photo galleries to accompany them. There are also links for the 5 resolutions and their outcomes, results of the elections to General and Jurisdictional Conferences for 2012 and clergy appointments for 2011-2012. Dr. Kenneth W. Chalker was appointed to serve at University Circle UMC. Several members of UCUMC were in attendance during the week for various reasons and we were fortunate to see Laverne Jenkins receive Music Certification from the Board of Ordained Ministry. Record numbers, including many from UCUMC, attended the Methodist Federation for Social Action Luncheon and Reconciling Ministries Network Parade and Open Table worship service on Wednesday. Three important events sponsored by these two groups are "Sing a New Song" in August, an Open Table Service here at UCUMC on October 9 and "Because it Matters" at Uniontown UMC on October 22 with featured speakers Bishop Judith Craig and Rev. Five resolutions were proposed and passed during the 2011 Annual Conference:

A Call to Advocate for the Enforcement of the Human Trafficking Laws in Ohio: The resolution asked that the conference contact Ohio governmental agencies encouraging new legislation and upholding legal action against human traffickers. It further asked that the Church and Society committee, in partnership with the East Ohio United Methodist Women and the Commission on the Status of Women of East Ohio Conference, advocate for this cause.
A Call to Support the Ohio Food Banks: The resolution asked the conference to commit to educate and encourage congregations to support local food banks with donations and volunteering. It further advocated for changes in public policy on state and local levels that will decrease hunger.
A Call to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The resolution asked that each United Methodist Church suspend activities and meetings unless it is to commemorate its observance.
A Call to Advocate for Continued Participation in Political Process and Support of Collective Bargaining. The resolution asked the conference to educate themselves and affirm the historic support of education, rights of workers and right to collective bargaining and to vote their conscience regarding the referendum initiative Ohio Bill 5.
A Call to Ensure Youth a Place on Committees and Councils: The resolution asked that local churches make it a focus that youth be a part of leadership and mission.

Families with young children are invited to stop by the new "Children's Table" at the back of the sanctuary on Sunday mornings. Here you will find children's worship bulletins (one version for ages 3-6 and another for ages 7-12) which relate to the morning's scripture reading. There are also activity bags containing crayons, paper and other quiet activities for children during worship. Look for a variety of changing surprises in the bags each week. Children are welcome to keep the contents of the bags, but we ask that you please return the bag itself to the table at the end of the service so that it can be used again. We look forward to welcoming children in worship this summer!

UCUMC at Parade The Circle Wrap-up

Parade The Circle was a phenomenal success once again this year. We are very grateful to Cathy Day and Marilyn Joerg for coordinating the supplies and arrangements for the popular UCUMC "Mad Hatter" booth. Thank you to all our volunteers who braved the heat to help Parade the Circle participants create an original, colorful, paper sunhat. Over 1,000 hats were made to the delight of children of all ages. Pastor Chalker, Michael Bier and Mark Floyd marched in the parade, which showcased the artistic and musical skills of local and international artists. A good time was had by all!

Summer Programming for Children and Youth at University Circle United Methodist Church

Infants, Toddlers, Preschoolers

Child care will be provided during worship this summer for infants, toddlers and preschoolers in the nursery on the lower mezzanine level.

Children (Grades K-6)

Today is the final day of Sunday School for children in grades K-6. We will celebrate Pentecost, the "birthday" of the church, with a party complete with cake and ice cream!

Sunday School will take a "summer vacation" beginning next Sunday, June 19th. Programming will resume on Sunday, September 11th. During the summer, our education space on the mezzanine level of the church will receive a much-anticipated renovation. This renovation will include the construction of new restrooms for boys and girls, as well as a painting "face-lift" and some new designs for the classrooms and hallways. The work that is being done will require us to pack up and store program furniture and materials, so the Sunday School rooms will not be functional program space during this time.

During the summer months, children in grades K-6 are invited to attend worship at 10am with their families. Each Sunday there will be a special children's bulletin related to the scripture lesson of the day, and activity bags (containing fun and quiet things to do!) will be available for young children during the worship service. We look forward to welcoming children and families to wonderful new educational spaces in the fall!

Youth (Grades 7-12)

Youth in grades 7 through 12 are invited to join their families in worship at 10am throughout the summer. Junior High and Senior High programming will resume on Sunday, September 11th.
